Many of us who start a diet and fitness program are caught between the need to follow the program and the rumbles in our tummies signifying that we are hungry and would like to eat. When our willpower is at its lowest ebb it is easier to fall a victim of hunger and thirst. If you eat too much of the wrong foods, it will take too much time to digest and also interfere with the sleep process. Here is a list of the terrible foods that you should never eat before bedtime.

1) Nut Based Butter

Almost any kind of nut based butter is bad to eat. It causes you to gain weight and will also disturb your sleep cycle. You might think that just one peanut or almond butter sandwich can never really make a difference to your weight, but studies show that this one habit can add as much as 2 pounds to your weight in one year. A better option would be to go for a glass of unsweetened almond milk. It will give you energy as well as relax you for a good night’s sleep.

2) Alcohol

Next on the list of bad foods is alcohol. Although it is a common misconception that alcohol can relax you, the long term effects are disastrous. It can keep you awake at night and disturb your sleep cycle. Many a times you may have come across people with bags under their eyes at the office which is a sign of imbibing too much alcohol at night. If you have a sleep problem such as insomnia, alcohol tends to worsen it in the long run. Just stay away from alcohol and you will be fine.

3) Candy Bars

Those cute looking tempting candy bars that you reach for in the night and they are the chief cause of sleeplessness and nightmares. You can become addicted to sugary sweets as a midnight snack, which would wreck your diet plan as well as your sleep cycle. Make it a point to stay away from candy in all its different forms.

4) Ice Cream

Many of us look at ice cream as a comforting food like chocolate. Unfortunately it is filled with fats and sugars, which can cause nightmares and make us put on weight at the same time. Reaching for a glass of unsweetened milk is a healthy alternative that is highly recommended.

5) Chips

Chips are one of the highly addictive foods that are hard to stop eating once you start. They have been the downfall of many a good dieter. Stay away from fries and chips of all kinds if you want to continue to lose weight. Don’t consume them when you are in front of the TV or the computer or it becomes a habit that is hard to break.

6) Red Meat

I know that red meat is recommended for its low fat and high protein content, but it is also true that red meat is one of the hardest and longest things to digest, which can keep us tossing and turning all night. Avoid if you can especially at bedtime.
